A small book press uses Safetinex light curtains for finger protection to monitor the press opening. Whenever a person’s hand is detected between the sender and the receiver unit, the book press will not operate; hence it will not present any hazardous situation to the operator. CUSTOMER APPLICATION With a pressing power of several tonnes, whenever the book press is operating, reaching inside the machine will most certainly result in serious injury to the person’s fingers or hand. The machine opening therefore needs to be monitored, preferably without mechanically blocking access. Since the book pressing process can be instantly stopped in every operating phase by an electric signal, this application is suitable for protection by an active opto-electronic protective device. In addition, there is no danger from ejecting pieces and therefore no need for physical fencing.
CUSTOMER SOLUTION The Safetinex YBB-14 finger protection series satisfies the application perfectly. A pair of YBB-14#4-0150-G012 light curtains is installed to monitor the machine opening and prevent injuries due to reaching in during operation or starting the machine before fingers are at a safe distance from the press. A basic YRB-0131-241 safety relay is used in manual restart mode as the system switching device. The reliability of this protection system is guaranteed by a fail-safe electronic design with permanent autocontrol. It is interesting to see that the machine opening is some centimeters higher than the protective height of the mounted safety light curtain. So in order to prevent reaching over the protective field and into the book press without detection, additional mechanical fencing (by means of a simple piece of Plexiglas) was mounted in this sensitive area.

Light curtains are used on a hydraulic press prototype to protect operators from possible injury. A prototype was built by the Institute for Fluid Power Drives and Controls at Aachen Technical University to demonstrate a component testing development environment for Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research. CUSTOMER APPLICATION The development environment simulates an entire system and tests interactions between all its specified components at the earliest design stage possible, before some have even been produced. To test and demonstrate this ‘hardware in the loop’ simulation, engineers built a prototype hydraulic press. Good visibility and reliable, fail-safe protection for the operators are essential. The protective device chosen must also ensure that the prototype represents a standard machine in a real situation. This hydraulic press is suitable for an optical safety solution, since any dangerous movement can be stopped at every defined operating phase. In addition, there is no risk of injury due to material ejected during its operation.
CUSTOMER SOLUTION Safetinex YBB safety light curtains satisfy the demands of this potentially dangerous application. They meet safety category 4 of EN ISO 13849-1 as well as type 4 of DIN EN 61496-1 and -2. The safety light curtain comprises a sender and a receiver unit. Infra-red beams create a protective field. .The chosen resolution of 14 mm is suitable for finger protection and has a maximum operating range of 3.5 m. LED displays on the sender and the receiver indicate field status, operating mode, transmission channel, and alignment quality. If any object enters the protective field, the press stops immediately. The reliability of this protection system is guaranteed by a fail-safe electronic design with permanent autocontrol.
FINGER RESOLUTION (14MM) TYPE 4 SAFETY LIGHT CURTAINS WITH A SHORT RESPONSE TIME ARE IDEAL FOR MACHINES WITH LIMITED SPACE. THE HIGHEST DEGREE OF PROTECTION MAKES THEM SUITABLE FOR MACHINES WHERE THE OPERATOR WORKS CLOSE TO THE HAZARD. THE EXTENDED SLIM CURTAINS OFFER BLUETOOTH FOR SET-UP & MONITORING FROM A MOBILE PHONE.

TYPE 4 SAFETY LIGHT CURTAINS - FINGER RESOLUTION (14MM)- BASIC OR ADVANCED SOLUTIONS
If space is limited and the safety distance must be short, finger detection is a good option as its 14mm resolution is about half that of hand detection and it will detect the object sooner than hand resolution will do. Consequently, this sort of light curtain is used in applications like assembly stations, pharmaceutical work cells and small press machines. Contrinex offers 14mm resolution in two product ranges, BASIC or EXTENDED SLIM: The BASIC range offers robust extruded housing (42 x 48mm), TÜV, CE and UL-certification according to IEC 61496-1 and -2 and ISO 13849-1. They feature permanent autocontrol and low power consumption with easy and low-cost installation provided by their use of an integral 5-pin M12 connector or pigtail. The EXTENDED SLIM range are all Type 4 light curtains which are TÜV, CE and UL certified according to IEC 61496-1/2, IEC 61508-1/2/3 and ISO 13849-1. Protective heights range from 170 to 1610 mm with integrated EDM*, restart interlock and beam coding. Since EDM includes a relay monitoring function, users can also avoid the cost of wired relays. The slim housing (26mm x 26mm) enables blind-zone free installation and connection is via an integral 5-pin or 8-pin M12 pigtail. Bletooth(R) wirless connectivity for configured and monitoring is offered using a free smartphone app – A world first!

Customer Solution OEM designers specified rugged inductive sensors from the Contrinex Basic and Miniature ranges. Not only did the available selection match the functional requirement exactly, the immediate availability of all the required devices from stock eliminated delays in ramping up capacity. All the specified sensors feature IO-Link connectivity, providing a single, industry-standard interface to the machine control system. Contrinex inductive sensors are designed with the needs of OEMs and system integrators in mind and provide an unobtrusive fit-and-forget solution. With a sensing distance of 4 mm, the two metal-cased M12 sensors used to monitor the positions of the steel fabric cutter and the printing head are robust and reliable. The M8 device that detects the feed position of the aluminium fixing strip has a V2A stainless-steel housing and an extended sensing distance of 2 mm, fitting snugly in the limited space available. The extra-distance miniature M5 sensor fitted at the welding station has a nickel-silver housing and was selected because of its 2.5-mm sensing distance, eliminating any danger of accidental collision during operation. Connection to all the specified sensors is via a PVC-sheathed cable with a 3-pin connector or 2-metre flying lead; alternative lengths are available. These highly versatile sensors meet designers’ needs for trouble-free operation using sensors from a single manufacturer. The solution is highly reliable, cost-effective and, critically, available without delay, allowing the immediate increase in machine-building capacity required by the OEM customer.
